Laboratory of Flow Cytometry Programs

Internship in Flow Cytometry

We also offer training in flow cytometry to investigators and their technical staff from anywhere in the world. The focus of this program is on the use of flow cytometry for multiparameter data acquisition and analysis. Training in sample preparation, instrumentation and data interpretation are offered.

Measurement Parameters: A detailed description of flow cytometry measurements is taught by hands on use.

The theory, practical problems and pitfalls in fluorescence compensation with emphasis on software compensation to address these problems are taught.

Instructions on the use of several multiparameter data analysis programs are given. Strategies in pattern recognition will be emphasized. A learning file is initially evaluated to teach the position, problems, and pitfalls for identification of populations. The transfer of this to batch processing of similar data files will be discussed. Methods for networking PCs and Macintosh computers together will be explored. The use of mass data storage and archiving and development of relational database are also taught. The program can be tailored to the specific needs of the visiting laboratorian.

A basic rate of $100/day is charged for standard laboratory training. These include standard reagents, antibodies and flow cytometry time. Costs for non-standard materials or supplies if any, will be determined after discussion of the particular project requirements. All times during the year are equally good except the Thanksgiving to Christmas period.

Graduate Program

A Masters or Ph.D. program in Experimental Pathology or Natural Sciences is available through the Roswell Park Graduate Division of the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB). Individuals seeking either program may apply directly to the graduate division and mention flow cytometry as the preferred specialty. Tuition for the Masters and Ph.D. programs can be waived for qualifying candidates and a work study program is available that will provide modest living expenses. A stipend ($21,000) is available for qualifying Ph.D. candidates.

Outreach Program

Great Lakes International Imaging and Flow Cytometry Association Meeting:

There are several regional users meetings that have been successful in providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and information related to flow cytometry. These meetings are often sponsored by the companies that offer instruments and reagents. The Great Lakes region has a very high concentration of flow cytometry laboratories and this association was formed to bring together flow cytometry users and especially their students. This meeting is held annually on a weekend in October in either Milwaukee, WI, Windsor ON, or Pittsburgh, PA and is open to anyone. Registration is $65.00 and includes a reception Friday, breakfast, lunch and a banquet on Saturday and a breakfast on Sunday. The major focus of this meeting is to bring clinical and research applications together for the laboratorian. Of particular importance to us are students, post-doctoral fellows and young investigators to highlight their research and provide a forum for presentation of results. Western New York Flow Users Group Meeting:

Flow cytometry is a powerful analytical tool with a wide range of applications in both research and clinical laboratories. The WNY-FUG was formed to promote the discussion of the science of flow cytometer in the Western New York region. The Fourth WNYFUG Meeting will be held on 11 July 2007.
